Common Security Risk Areas

Security should be a high priority, commercial or residential, as there can be both financial and emotional consequences if this security is breached.

If you have a weakness in your security, this can be exploited and could make a security breach easier for burglars or vandals. To help you make sure that you are making as few mistakes as possible, we’ve created a helpful guide about some of the most common security risks.

Keys

Having key locks means that only those who have the key can access your door, but this means that you have to be careful about who has your keys.

Keys should be given to as few people as possible, and those people should be trustable and not clumsy enough to lose it! Another point to remember is that under no circumstances at all should you have a spare key in a hiding place. Smart burglars will be able to figure out where it is hidden.

Locks

Locks that only lock the handle and do not deadbolt the door are good for privacy but offer very little security.

It is fine to have these on some internal doors but for doors that you want to keep locked shut for security and external doors, you should make sure that you have a deadbolt lock. You should also not skimp on locks as saving a little on a lock in the short term may mean losing thousands of pounds of possessions later on.

Hiding places

Having any badly lit areas or any around your property is basically giving burglars and vandals places to hide.

If there are any areas that are very much in shade then make sure to install some lighting. PIR lights are a good investment as they will only turn on if they detect movement; saving you money on electricity and acting as an alert that somebody may be trying to break into your property.

You should also make sure that if you have any decorative features such as trees and bushes these are trimmed as much as possible so that they do not offer a good hiding place.

Doors

Having a strong lock is important, but a lock’s effectiveness is only as strong as its door. Make sure any door that you need locked for security purposes is made out of a strong material, or at the very least reinforced in the weaker areas. This will ensure that your door will not easily be kicked in and people will be deterred from even trying so.
