Selecting the correct Tigris lock cylinder system

 The Tigris locks’ cylinder system offers four cylinder levels;
• Tigris®
• Tigris Plus
• Tigris Premier
• Tigris Omega
When selecting the cylinder system most appropriate for an application the following factors must be considered:
- How secure should the system be?
- How accessible should the system be?
- How large and how complex should the masterkey system be?
- What kind of cylinders are needed in the system?
- How convenient should key duplicating be?
- What functions are required from the cylinder system?

How secure should the system be?

There are three main aspects of security for cylinders:
Physical Security, Key Control & Patent Protection.

Physical Security: The number of pins, the use of drill protected cylinder bodies and plugs and the use of anti-pick pins all enhance the security of the cylinder. BSEN 1303: 2005 is the European standard for cylinder locks and grades all cylinders in many aspects. These include ‘Key related security’ and ‘Attack resistance’. Tigris keys make the highest grades in the standard and further details can be seen on page 11 of this brochure.

Key Control: Systems that rely on copyright protection can no longer be legally protected from others manufacturing and selling ‘pirate’ keyblanks. Only cylinder systems that offer Patent protection for their keys can truly legally protect against illegal keyblank duplication.

Premier Patent: The Patented Tigris Premier system operates much like a conventional 6 pin cylinder, with the exception that one of the pins has a unique patented ‘pip’ at the tip. To operate correctly there must be a corresponding cavity in the underside of the key profile. A key which does not have the correct cavity will not depress the special ‘pip’ pin to the correct position and the cylinder will fail to operate.
Premier systems are patent protected up to 2013

Omega Patent: The Patented Tigris® Omega system operates much like the Premier cylinder, with the exception that the patented ‘pip’ at the tip is replaced by a patented ‘Reef’ pin. To operate correctly there must be a corresponding ‘Reef-Line Signature’ in the underside of the key profile. A key which does not have the correct Signature will not depress the special ‘ReefTM’ pin to the correct position and the cylinder will fail to operate.
Omega systems are patent protected up to 2020

What kind of cylinders are needed in the system?

A large range of cylinder types are available within the Tigris locks system. In addition to the variation in cylinder types, a comprehensive range of euro profile and oval profile cylinder lengths are also available to suit a wide range of door and hardware thicknesses.

Tigris – Unrestricted Cylinder Range with some limitations on cylinder sizes and finishes

Tigris Plus – Unrestricted Cylinder System with a comprehensive range of cylinder options  and cylinder sizes

Tigris Premier – Patented Multi-Profile Cylinder system capable of very large and complex Master Key Suiting.Patent cover both Key and Cylinder expires in 2013.

Tigris Omega – Patented Multi-Profile Cylinder system capable of extremely large and complex Master Key Suiting.Patent cover both Key and Cylinder expires in 2020.

What functions are required in the system?

Construction Keying

Maintaining security during the construction process of a building often requires the locks and cylinders to be installed at an early stage. This can lead to security being compromised on completion with keys unreturned from the contractor.
We have developed a construction cylinder which will allow the contractor full access during the construction period. A mechanism inside the cylinders is activated by the first insertion and rotation of the masterkeys which are issued at ‘hand-over’. The construction keys are automatically negated from the system.

• Allows the contractors full access during the construction period

• Un-returned contractors keys do not compromise security beyond ‘hand-over’.

What functions are required in the system?

Clutch Functionality

We have developed a cylinder where the key, when entered, disengages the thumbturn by use of a clutch mechanism. This will allow the door to be unlocked even if the thumbturn is being held in the locked position from the inside.
The security and safety implications make the use of the clutch cylinder ideal for situations such as schools, secure institutions or any other area where a non keyholder may take advantage of controlling the door by holding the thumbturn in the locked position to prevent the door being unlocked.

• Prevents control of the door from inside by holding the turn in the locked position

Classroom Function Cylinder

We have further developed the clutch cylinder where the turn can only unlock the door (see illustration).

• Features are identical to the clutch cylinder with the addition that the turn can only unlock the door

Tigris ThumbTurn Options

Thumb turns

Elliptical turn

Supplied as standard on all Tigris® single and turn cylinders; the smooth pebble-like design is comfortable to operate and is compatible with most contemporary hardware ranges

Architectural oval turn

Designed specifically for use with highly aesthetic hardware ranges; does not compete visually with the other door hardware

Traditional oval turn

Designed specifically for use with highly aesthetic hardware ranges ; does not compete visually with the other door hardware

Hewi coloured nylon turn

Designed specifically for use with Hewi coloured nylon hardware ranges; a vast and comprehensive range of colours is available.

Anti-ligature turn

Conventional door hardware provides a suitable means of attaching a ligature of some description for the purpose of self harm. We have developed a thumbturn which, when used in conjunction with a suitable anti-ligature escutcheon, avoids any projections which can be used to attach a ligature.
• Ideal for applications where the avoidance of self harm is a design consideration, such as care homes, psychiatric and custodial institutions.
• Prevents the application of a noose when used in conjunction with a suitable range of Anti-Ligature door furniture.

Tigris Locks ‘Force Reduction’ accessible turns ‘when less is more’

Tigris DDAThe only thumbturn on the market to fully conform to BS8300 and assists with meeting the requirements of the DDA.The cylinder requires no finger pinching or wrist to operate.

Accessible thumbturn

Almost without exception single and turn cylinders, when used in applications where individuals with special needs will
operate the door, the thumbturn is simply made larger with little consideration for those that may have difficulty applying
a grip or twisting the wrist.
We have developed a thumbturn for our cylinder ranges which remains compact but operates with a lever action and does
not therefore require a grip or twisting of the wrist to operate the turn.

For applications where the lock being used will not permit the use of the full Accessible Thumbturn we provide a Mini
Accessible turn. The leverage it provides is considerably more than a conventional thumbturn and, as with the full size
version, removes the necessity to twist the wrist to operate.

Integrated & accessible without compromise

The basis for the eTigris®|ONE design was predominantly performance; the desire for accessibility and the opportunity for integrating electronic and mechanical security systems. But the end result is a stylish and desirable solution which will have benefits for users of all abilities and will sit comfortably in even the highest quality architectural environment.

Integration benefits

eTigris®|ONE is a unique security solution which can combine both the electronic fob and mechanical keys, integrated into a single credential which can be used throughout the building.

  • Integrated security solution with Tigris Premier or Omega masterkey systems
  • Design which focuses on ease of use, of both electronically and mechanically secured doors
  • One credential is all that is required
  • Flexible solution
    • Mechanical keys can be upgraded to eTouch keys later
    • eTigris®|ONE users can incorporate the mechanical Tigris Premier or Omega master key system later

Further information is provided in the integration benefits section.

Accessible benefits

The eTigris®|ONE accessible control system is designed specifically to meet the needs of less able users. But these features benefit us all; clear, helpful and intuitive visual signals from the reader unit and alerts with adjustable volume can cope with user hearing impairments or heavy road traffic equally successfully.
